I derive great joy and fulfillment in assisting the older population and their caregivers. My goal is to improve safety, quality of life and overall well being of this population. Through home assessment and education on home modification, older individuals can decrease their risks of falls and stay in their homes longer. Simple changes, including hazard abatement, and some minor home enhancements can make a big difference safetywise. Occupational therapists (OT) are well trained in home modification to prevent falls, and provide accommodations, and access. They also provide interventions to address footwear-realated falls indoors and outdoors. Studies have shown a connection between the use of inappropriate footwear and falls.
I have personally witnessed many inappropriate footwear use among my older clients, and many times, inappropriate footwear was in use at the time of their falls. Some of the features of inappropriate footwear are non-enclosed heel, smooth sole, lack of fixations like velcro and so on. Studies have also shown that house slippers are the most unsafe footwear type worn by older adults. House slippers are also the footwear type mostly worn during the time of their falls. My goal as an occupational therapist is to educate my clients and their caregivers on all aspects of the decision-making process in selecting the appropriate footwear, their importance in fall prevention, and recommend the safest based on individual needs.
In continuing in the service and well-being of the older population, and in the quest to satisfy my yearning desire to strengthen my professional capabilities, I further obtained certification as a CDP, and CADDCT. Thus, I train healthcare practitioners and caregivers of clients with Dementia on the Dementia processes and the care of people with Dementia through the Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia Care(ADDC) course. This course is required in the pathway to becoming a Certified Dementia Practitioner. (CDP). I offer this course through the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP).
